This week's ups and downs
14 November 2008
Hot and not
GOING UP
• Ship shape and...
Dubai developer Nakheel, which has bought the QE2 from Cunard for £50 million, says it plans to transform the vessel into a luxury floating hotel and build a “very British” marine complex around it, including a nautical museum and gardens.
• ...Bristol fashion
Green group Forum for the Future says Bristol is the UK’s most sustainable city. Last year’s winner, Brighton, came second, Plymouth was third, and Newcastle, the only northern city in the top five, rose from eight to four.
• Not an ill wind
The world’s largest wind turbine maker, Danish firm Vestas, has reported third-quarter earnings of €160 million (£132 million), up from €102 million year on year. Sales are set to reach €5.7 billion (£4.7 billion) in 2008.
GOING DOWN
• Buy runs dry
The number of first-time buyers is now the smallest per quarter since 1974. The Council of Mortgage Lenders said there were 44,500 between July and September, down from 164,400 in the same period in 2001.
• Fat lady sings
Half a dozen houses on West 28th Street in Manhattan, where songs by Irving Berlin, Scott Joplin and Fats Waller were first sung, is under threat of demolition amid plans to sell it and put up a high-rise block.
• Trams are shed
Ken loved them, Boris can’t abide them. A new tramline for Oxford Street, an extension to Croydon’s Tramlink and a cross-river tram have all been scrapped.
